The Shuddering

I wrote a review for this book over at my book review blog, but I wanted to share it here as well. I haven't had much time for anything horror related since I started my final semester of college. Happy to say I finally graduated with my history degree... what am I to do now... no clue, but there are things like paranormal researcher and what not that comes to mind.

Anyway I happen to find this book while looking for a new book to read that was part of Kindle's loaning library through Prime. If you can afford to get Prime it's worth it. So this book showed up and it sounded interesting. It only too me a few days to read it. I was hooked onto it and couldn't put the book down.

The synopsis of the story without giving too much away is a group of friends meet up at a cabin they went to as kids to see each other before one of them moves to Europe and to say goodbye to the cabin because it belongs to someone else. While up there a huge snow storm traps them in. No big deal expect there is something out in the woods that is threatening their lives.

This book is an excellent example of a horror story. Think of some of the best ones and usually the monster isn't your typical vampire, werewolf mutant and ect and 99% of the characters die. This book doesn't tell you want the monsters are, but just describes them. It's done well and you're okay not knowing what exactly the monsters are. There's no need for it and I am so glad the author didn't have one of the characters give us a natural history lesson on the creatures. So the monsters are told well and even the kill scenes are done well and described well as well.

The rest of the book is done well. None of the characters are too much for you nor do you see who's going to die first by the characters. It's a surprise at the end of who makes it and the book ends like most good horror movies do. You have no feeling of safety or happy ending. You're left wondering if it was all over or not. Though I don't know if there will be a follow up book it was left where there is no need for one, but one could be done.

If you are looking for a good horror book to read, grab this one. It won't disappoint.
