Horror Block May 2015

I decided to try a subscription box for myself and I went with Nerd Block's Horror Block. There's no theme in them unlike other boxes but here's what I got and my rating on each item and the overall box, plus some views on the process.

The first item was a Hannibal Funko Pop
I don't watch the show so I don't know who the character I got was, but the name is Jack. Funko are always good quality, it's just not one I'm thrilled with. 2/5

The second item was a Silent Hill shirt. I'm not 100% sure of the material but it seems like a good shirt. 4/5

The third was a Rue Morgue dvd on the best horror shorts. I haven't watched he'd any. More than likely I'll watch them and then be done with it. I've gotten music collections from Rue Morgue and they were ok. 3/5

The fourth item was a trivia again from Rue Morgue on horror trivia. I read through some of it. Pretty interesting for the most part. I'm not a trivia nerd bur I do like history. 5/5

The fifth item was a print of the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Which is one of my favorite Universal Monster movie. 5/5

And the last item was the June Issue of Rue Morgue magazine. I have to hide it from my son since the cover has a graphic image from The Human Centipede 3. I will read/skim the magazine I use to buy it. 4/5

I feel like overall the box is a 3 stars, but I feel like it rook a long time to get to my house. It was suppose to ship on the 25th of the month unless I read that wrong. I got my notice is was being shipped on the 30th of May and it didn't seem to actually ship if UPS site was accurate until June 3rd. I got it on June 6 th. I'm use to my husband's lootcrate that comes during the month not the following month. I canceled but I think I was too late to stop June's box. So we'll see if that one is any good. If so maybe I'll sign up again. If anyone has luck with another horror subscription box let me know.

Movies To Help a Horror Newbie

I been wanting to do this for sometime and finally decided to sit down and do it. I've decided to come up with a list of movies that those wanting to start getting into horror movies should watch first before delving into some more complicated and weird ones. I will preface that all the movies I will mention are the originals not the remakes. I am doing this because those original movies set the bar and I feel like the remakes did a bad job at capturing the fear and suspense that the originals had. Plus, some of the original ones had better make-up and effects I feel than the remakes.

So with that stated lets get started.

Halloween
Friday the 13
Nightmare on Elm Street
Scream
Psycho
House of 1,000 Corpses
Universal Monsters: Creature from the Black Lagoon, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy Curse/The Mummy's Ghost
Dawn of the Dead
Urban Legend
Poltergeist
The Night of the Living Dead
It
The Shinning
The Puppet Master
Jeepers Creepers

Movies to Stay Away From

Saw
Human Centipede ( all 3 of them)
The Cabin in the Woods
Evil Dead
Paranormal Activity
Blair Witch Project

Yes some of these are my favorite but they either have a lot of elements from my to watch list or you need a good horror  background to understand.

For example if you are new to horror Cabin in the Woods not only takes a lot of the early story from Evil Dead it also has a scene near the end with cameos of tons of other horror characters and I feel that to get the full impact you need some homework done before you watch it.

Some I think are very gorey and have some triggering moments that might turn someone off right away.

So have anything to add to the lists? Let me know of you agree or disagree with what I have here.

What I've Been Watching

I've been mia for a while. I'm good, just dealing with job changes and what not, but here's what I've been watching that has not made a review post.

The Dead Files- I'm not sure what channel this show is/was on, but it showed up on Netflix and I've been watching it pretty constant. While a lot of these reality ghost shows are not always real I usually enjoy them more for the historical elements to them.

Lizzie Borden Took An Axe- this movie stars Christina Ricci and it's not too bad. I will say it's a little like Pinky Blinders where you have modern music playing in a period piece. It's not great, but it's decent.

Z Nation- I decided to give this show a try. It's actually not bad at all. A little different from the Walking Dead and other zombie shows/movies.

IZombie- ok yes it's a little corny, but I like it since it's similar to Veronica Mars. I also read the first issue of the comic the show it loosely based off.

The Book of Life- Yes, it's a kids movie, but it's really good and it deals with Day of the Dead.

Exit Humanity- It's an interesting movie, I don't remember too much of it though.

Underworld: Awaking- okay I'm not sure why they kept making this movies, but it wasn't that great of a story.

The Quiet Ones- A really odd movie, but it does have it's creepy moments

Deliver Us From Evil- another movie that I do not remember much of and it mostly was because it just could not hold my attention.
